Scope

Lighting an iconic London Landmark.

The resplendent glazed atrium at Northern & Shell stands ten storeys high on the bank of the river Thames. The building, which has stood for over three decades, required a complete replacement of its outdated and failing high level amenity lighting.

Challenges

This project presented numerous challenges, not least of which was that the existing luminaires were suspended over 30 metres above the atrium floor and as it turned out, just out of reach of the window access basket! To make life more complicated, the reception at Northern & Shell is open 24/7 to allow residential access, so finding a window to complete the job safely, was no easy task.

LightPlanet Solution

The LightPlanet solution comprised twenty 240W high efficacy, compact LED high bay fittings, to replace the 400W sodium luminaires in situ. At 135 lumens/watt, the replacement fittings have an output of 32,400 lumens each, giving the reception area below a long-awaited lift in lighting levels.

Over one weekend in November, our installation partners Ensigna Construction and Synergy Electric abseiled from the access basket to safely remove the cumbersome sodium fittings and replace them with the smaller and lighter LED equivalents. During this process, Ensigna took the time to suspend the new fittings lower down, to ensure any future access for could be safely completed from inside the basket, without specialist equipment.

Running 24/7, the LightPlanet solution saves the Client over £3,700 and 16.2 tonnes of CO2 consumption every year. In 2.95 years, the savings from the LED fittings will have paid for the supply and install of the project.
